About The Goodwin & Gordon Family Tree
Please sign in to see more. This site is dedicated to the memory of my grandparents, Tom and Frances (our Sal) Gordon. Two wonderful people that wrapped us in love and lived for their family. Both now "Gone onto Glory", as gran would say, but still very much with us in our hearts and minds.
I started this research back in the late 1990's and very soon I was hooked. From those early days of a little local (Dorset) research at our Records Office things snowballed (I am glad to say).... What started with the intention of finding out about my 3xgt grandfather, George Notley Brine, soon became my obsession to learn more about just who made my family the people we are today. George was one of the first Police Constables in the old Weymouth Borough Police Force, joining when it was formed in 1846. I also discovered from newspaper reports that George was PC No1 and during the course of his 27 years service he rose to become the first Weymouth born police sergeant (again from newspaper reports we discovered he was Sgt No1). George was also offered the position of Superintendent of Police but declined the promotion on the grounds that he was due to retire very soon...... George went on to serve another 7 years! (Update August 2012..... Many, many thanks to my recently discovered 2nd cousin 2xremoved, Barbara, for the fantastic photograph of George)
Family legend also has it that we were distantly related to the Tolpuddle Brine's.... Something that we still cannot claim 100% but is a high probability, just looking for the proof of the one last detail!
My family tree covers the counties of Dorset, Hampshire, Essex, Gloucester, Somerset, Wiltshire, Co Durham, Northumberland and even has a trip to the Channel Islands and India. Not only will you find five members of the police force but also fishermen, miners, sailors, soldiers, members of the Clergy and parish clerks, tide waiters (Customs Officers) farm labourers, a Thames sailing barge Master, cobblers, coal haulers, painters and glaziers, seamstresses, insurance agent, block and mast makers, innkeepers, errand boys, pit pony boy, general servants, gardeners, a shepherd, lime burner and so many more.
Should you find anything on these pages which helps you with your research it would be appreciated if you would acknowledge the source back to me.
I have marked family lines as follows -
Red = My direct line (Heather)
Yellow = Ancestor of Thomas William Gordon (1912-1995), my Grandfather Pink = Ancestor of Frances Maud Goodwin (1919-2002), my Grandmother Green = Related by blood to Thomas William Gordon
White = Related by blood to Frances Maud Goodwin
I hope by doing this that my family will be able to see "the bigger picture".
